Solar Eclipses, Geology, and the Arc of History: An Iberian Story

David Evans '92, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale, is an expert on the past motions of continents, the forces that build and destroy mountain ranges, and long-term evolution of the Earth. After graduating from Yale, he completed a PhD at the California Institute of Technology and did postdoctoral research at the University of Western Australia. His research spans most of the globe, recently concentrating in remote areas of Canada, Morocco, and Namibia. He is popular among Yale undergraduate students, both scientists and non-scientists, for taking his classes into the field for direct experiential learning of geology and humankind's role in the natural world; past trips have toured Australia, Barbados, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, and both eastern and western United States. Since 2016, he has been Head of Berkeley College.
