Maya Mexico: Pyramids, Petroglyphs and Pre-History

Based in the colonial city of Mérida, this program visits four ancient Maya cities to explore the architectural wonders of these Pre-Columbian metropolises. You'll explore the region's natural geological phenomena of “cenotes,” limestone sinkholes belonging to the underground rivers and water systems that made agrourban life possible. The city of Mérida has the third largest Spanish colonial district in the Americas, and one of the best preserved. The Yucatán is also fringed by some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Marvel at flamingos in the the pink lagoon of Las Coloradas and learn Mayan mythology at the archaeological sites of Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and Kabah. Visiting a modern Maya community you'll experience the living traditions of this great civilization.
