Walk El Camino de Santiago September 23 - October 5, 2022 with Professor Noel Lenski
For more than 1,000 years, pilgrims have walked the Camino de Santiago, the “Way of St. James,” to the shrine of the Apostle at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Join us to experience the most interesting sections of the Camino during a rare occasion—the festive Compostela Holy Year (Xacobeo), observed for the first time in 11 years. Daily, invigorating walks will range from approximately 3-5 miles. Conclude with Mass at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the traditional incense-burning ceremony will be performed specially for our group. Our leader for this program is Noel Lenski, Professor of History and Classics whose research interests include Medieval Spain and more.

Meet Professor Noel Lenski
Watch Professor Noel Lenski's most recent Yale Alumni Academy lecture on-demand. "What is a slave society" explores the practice of slavery as it has manifested across global cultures from antiquity up to the present. It looks at the truly global reach of slaving and enslavement stretching backward from the late nineteenth century CE to the third millennium BCE. In doing so, it contextualizes the intensification of slaveholding practices in certain periods and places, focusing particularly on ancient Rome and the U.S. South. The goal is to better understand not just the deep and sordid history of slavery but also the ongoing struggles faced by the US and the globe. Professor Lenski will be leading the El Camino de Santiago tour in September, 2022.
